Memorial Day 2002
F. James Sensenbrenner
I've long admired a quote by former President Reagan, where he says that we don't have to look in history books to find heroes. Heroes are all around us, in every American city and town. On September 11, 2001, a number of us realized this in a very real, and very personal way. It was shortly after, that the US went to war again.

Honoring the Defenders of Freedom on Memorial Day
Bob Barr
Like no other national holiday, Memorial Day touches the hearts and memories of every American who loves his country. It is more than a celebration. It is more than waving flags and hearing speeches. The Fourth of July celebrates our independence. Memorial Day is more. Memorial Day honors those who actually gave their lives to preserve that independence and those blessings.

We Will Never Forget
Shelley Moore Capito
This Monday is Memorial Day. All across America, school children are off from school and many adults aren't required to go into work. But aside from all of the parades, picnics and potato salad, it is very important that we not only celebrate Memorial Day, but that we also understand the meaning and significance of the holiday.

New Video Technology Provides Realistic Speech Animation
A student thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has resulted in the creation of groundbreaking technology that can make videos of people saying things they never said. This is good news for video editors and special effects technicians who will be able to fix misspoken lines or improve the look of dubbed movies. But other people are concerned that the technology raises some ethical questions about falsifying the moving image, also known as "video forgery."

A Legacy of Freedom
Jo Ann Emerson
Our country has a great military history with each generation being called to stand guard or fight in the defense of our freedoms and our interests. They reflect the finest tradition of those in uniform who defended the trenches at Chateau-Thierry; won the battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific; stormed the beaches of Normandy in France; fought the Chinese at Pork Chop Hill in Korea; faced the Viet Cong in the jungles of Vietnam; and drove Saddam Hussein's troops from Kuwait.

Europe and America
George W. Bush
In this last century, the conflicts of Europe led to war and suffering for America. Today, Europe is growing in unity and peace, and that benefits our country. The nations of the European Union have made strong contributions to the war on terror. And the volume of our annual trade and investment relationship is nearly $2 trillion, helping workers, consumers, and families on both continents.

More Options for Public School Children
Kay Bailey Hutchison
Private school parents have many options for their children's education, including all-boys or all-girls schools or classrooms. But due to bureaucratic barriers, parents whose children attend public schools have been denied this choice. But things are about to change. In January, President Bush signed the "No Child Left Behind Act" into law.

Home Schooled 10-Year-Old Wins Geography Bee
Can kids be better educated in a home school setting? Some people are taking a closer look at home schooling, after Calvin McCarter, a home-schooled 10-year-old from Michigan, became the youngest contestant ever to win the National Geographic Bee. McCarter, who is taught by his mother, was one of 12 home-schooled contestants out of the 55 finalists in the bee.

The Sponsors of Terror
Jon Kyl
Seven dictatorships continue to sponsor terrorism, posing a threat to innocent people around the world. So states the latest edition of the "Patterns of Global Terrorism" report, issued by the U.S. Department of State just this week. The 2001 report underscores the severity of the terrorist threat. It also demonstrates that a key aspect of the U.S. war against terrorism must be to confront the states that harbor and support it.

Smoke Get In Your Eyes?
William F. Buckley Jr.
Have the long fingernails of the state's smoking laws scratched up your life? There are two federal laws that authorize interventions to prohibit people from smoking. At their arrant worst, in Colorado, you are (theoretically) not allowed to smoke at a campsite. Neither, as a matter of fact, are you allowed to build a fire at a campsite, this last perhaps understandable, inasmuch as campfires can cause forest fires.
