Et Tu, Europe? TruthNews Commentary, June 8, 2001 Three times in the past century, America has saved Europe from being overrun by tyranny. In two World Wars, we provided our blood and money to fight Europe’s wars so that Europe could continue to be free. During the Cold War, as many as half a million of our soldiers, more than the total population of some European countries, stood shoulder to shoulder with soldiers of Germany, England, France, and a host of smaller nations to defend against the red tide of Soviet aggression. Our vast nuclear arsenal provided the deterrent capability that protected Europe from nuclear annihilation. Now that the once implacable foe has been vanquished and their Godless communism relegated to the ashbin of history, we face new challenges, such as a growing nuclear threat from rogue nations like North Korea, China, Libya, Iraq, and Iran. Once again, America has taken the lead in standing up to these forces of evil. President Bush, unlike his waffling predecessor, has declared his intention to press ahead with development of a national missile defense system. Our technological superiority allows us to build an effective defense system to turn the prized weapons of these rogue nations into useless pieces of scrap metal. And once again, our erstwhile allies are standing shoulder to shoulder with America to move ahead on this critical defense need - right? Wrong! When Secretary of State Colin Powell pitched the proposed missile defense system at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, all he could get was a bland promise to "study the issue." This week, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is trying his hand at convincing our recalcitrant allies to support us. He'll probably get no further than Gen. Powell. The NATO defense ministers are more worried about Macedonia than about missiles striking the U.S., and now, no doubt, they want us to bomb those pesky "ethnic Albanian militants" (a.k.a., Muslim terrorists) into submission. And why are these "ethnic Albanian militants" making so much trouble? Well the "ethnic Albanian militants" were at one point called Kosovars, and NATO (mainly America led by Bill Clinton) bombed Slobodan Milosevic's Yugoslavia/Serbia so that the Kosovars could be autonomous. Milosevic is currently making license plates for Yugos until he can be handed over to the international war crimes tribunal for crimes against humanity (he's a communist -- what do you expect? At TruthNews, we believe that all communist dictators and former dictators should be handed over to be tried for crimes against humanity). Meanwhile, the people we tried to help are now committing the aggression by trying to grab a piece of Macedonia (another former part of Yugoslavia, not to be confused with the Macedonia that's part of Greece where Alexander "the Great" came from, although if you read his biography, you'll realize that perhaps he wasn't so great after all). But, we digress. We were discussing national missile defense, but the Kosovo mess makes a good example of what happens when America tries to follow a foreign policy crafted by Europeans. These were the same clowns, after all, who tried to appease Hitler and ended up getting into a 6-year world war because they didn't have the guts to stand up to him when they could. So why is it that European leaders remain so adamantly opposed to U.S. national missile defense? Is it because deep in their hearts the European leaders have a secret desire to see America nuked? Yes, that’s about the size of it. In spite of all the blather about how missile defenses would be de-stabilizing and spark a new arms race, that excuse remains just that, an excuse. With the collapse of that evil empire, the Soviet Union, America stands supreme as the one superpower in the world. Who is there to have an arms race with? Russia, which still has a thousand nuclear weapons pointed at us but can't even afford to maintain them? China, which has threatened to double its nuclear arsenal from 20 long-range missiles to 40? Get serious! The real answer is that the European leaders are envious of our power because they want to be the top dog themselves. German's chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and foreign minister Jascha Fischer (Hitler and Ribbentrop once held these jobs) are pressing ahead with their efforts to unify Europe, thereby fulfilling Hitler's evil plan. With over 500 million people, the European empire will be twice the size of America. A few nukes hitting Los Angeles and New York from a rogue nation would be just the thing to cut us down to size. But aren't the Europeans worried about getting nuked themselves? No, they have that one covered, too. You see, most of the missiles that would strike Europe are shorter-range missiles. There are already defense systems being developed to handle shorter-range missiles. And who's developing these defensive systems, which are clearly allowed by the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty with the no longer existing Soviet Union? Why, the good old U.S. of A., of course. Here's the real hypocrisy of the European reluctance to support U.S. national missile defense. They want us to help defend them against the shorter-range missiles that they might be threatened with, while denying us the right to defend ourselves. Wake up and smell the coffee, America! Europe is not our friend! They may not be our enemy (but then, neither was Germany in 1932), but they definitely don't have our best interests at heart. So why listen to them anyway? If Jamaica spoke up and said they didn't support our missile defense plans, would we care? It's time to tell the European leaders to take a hike.
