Taco Bell Promises Free Tacos if Mir Hits Pacific Target

Voice of America, March 20, 2001

Millions of Americans now have a vested interest in seeing Russia's Mir space station plunge into the Pacific Ocean.

U.S.-based fast food chain Taco Bell is promising to give free tacos to every American, if the core of the 15-year-old space station hits a floating target off the coast of Australia. Parts of Mir are scheduled to splash down Friday, but most of the space station is expected to burn up upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

A spokeswoman for Taco Bell says she does not know the odds of Mir hitting the bull's eye. But one aerospace expert says they are slim to none. In the event Mir hits the target, Taco Bell has taken out an insurance policy to cover the cost of the free taco's - estimated at just under $10 million.

The bull's eye is 12 meters by 12 meters and is emblazoned with the words "Free Taco Here."
