Terrorist Kills 5 in Tennessee Bus Attack

Voice of America, October 3, 2001

The largest U.S. intercity bus company is rolling again after a passenger slashed a driver's throat with what may have been a box cutter, causing a crash that killed six people, including the attacker.

Greyhound bus lines suspended nationwide service for about seven hours Wednesday as a security precaution.

Greyhound President Craig Lentzch said the attack was the action of what he called a lone deranged individual. The FBI indentifies him as 29-year-old Damir Igric - a Croatian who came to the United States in 1999 on a one-month visa.

Federal investigators say the incident is unrelated to last month's terrorist attack on the United States. They also say the motive for Wednesday's incident is unknown.

The bus trip originated in Chicago and was on its way to Orlando, Florida. The bus overturned on a highway south of Nashville, Tennessee in the southern U.S.

A passenger told a Tennessee television station that Igric kept coming to the front of the bus to ask her for the time. She said he demanded to sit in her seat and when she refused to give it up, Igric slashed at the driver's throat.

The bus overturned, killing six passengers. The driver survived, but Igric was thrown through the front window and died.
