NASA Halts X-33 Development Voice of America, March 2, 2001 The U.S. space agency NASA has ended development of the intended successor to the space shuttle. NASA announced it would end the X-33 program because the technology behind the vehicle's fuel tanks is not advanced enough for the design to succeed. The X-33 was proposed in 1996 as a reliable, reusable spacecraft that could greatly reduce space launch costs. But critics said the project was too ambitious and relied on untested technologies. NASA invested more than $1 billion on the X-33, which never had a test flight. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |
