Pioneer 10 Probe Lives On Voice of America, April 30, 2001 NASA reports it has contacted Pioneer 10, ending fears that the robotic probe had gone silent 29 years into a mission that has carried it more than 11-billion kilometers from Earth. A radio antenna near Madrid, Spain received a signal from Pioneer 10 on Saturday, marking the first time the spacecraft has been heard from since August last year. Project manager Larry Lasher declared "Pioneer 10 lives on" in reporting the news on the mission's Web site. The space probe was launched in 1972. It was the first spacecraft to pass through the asteroid belt, the first to obtain close-up images of Jupiter, and, in 1983, it became the first man-made object to leave the solar system. Pioneer 10 carries a gold plaque engraved with a message of goodwill and a map showing the Earth's location, just in case it comes into contact with extraterrestrial life during its ongoing voyage. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |
