Astronomers Discover 8 New Planets

Voice of America, October 16, 2001

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) says an international team of astronomers have discovered eight new planets orbiting nearby stars.

NASA and the National Science Foundation issued the announcement Monday in Washington. The team included astronomers from the United States, Australia and Belgium.

The organizations said two of the new planets have circular orbits comparable to those found in the Earth's solar system.

A director at NASA says the recent discoveries will help provide answers about the formation and evolution of planets and planetary systems.
