Israeli Scientists Develop Bio-Computer

Voice of America, November 24, 2001

Israeli scientists say they have developed a biological computer-like device so small that one-trillion of them - all working together - can be contained in a single drop of water measuring one-tenth of a millimeter.

The biological computer, or automaton, was created by scientists at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science, near Tel Aviv. A report on the research has been published in the latest edition of the science magazine Nature.

The director of the institute, Ehud Shapiro, said the computer uses enzymes as hardware, which in turn manipulates DNA molecules as software to create a single computing machine.

Although the minuscule computer is yet to have a practical use, Israeli scientists say it might some day be used to sense an abnormal biochemical change in the body and decide how to correct it by synthesizing and releasing the proper drug.
