China Demolishes Hundreds of Churches and Temples December 13, 2000
Chinese officials say the communist government is demolishing hundreds of churches and temples in one southeastern coastal province, enforcing a crackdown on illegal worship activities there. State media report the demolitions began this month in rural areas around the port city of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province. A Hong Kong-based human rights group, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, puts the number of churches and temples destroyed at about 1,200. A spokesman for Wenzhou city says as many as 450 buildings have been destroyed. China's communist government allows only organized religion to function under control of the state. It frequently launches crackdowns on so-called underground churches that do not recognize the state's authority.
