China Warns U.S. On Anti-Missile Shield Voice of America, December 19, 2000
China has again warned the United States against plans to develop an anti-missile defense shield. A spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry told reporters in Beijing Tuesday that China is gravely concerned about any plans to develop a national missile defense. She said such a shield would have a far-reaching negative impact on world stability. The comment is seen as a message to the incoming administration of President-elect George W. Bush. During the presidential campaign, Mr. Bush pledged to push for rapid deployment of a missile defense system. His designated nominee for Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has also expressed support for the initiative. The retired General also has said he plans to discuss the proposed system with nations that oppose it. China has repeatedly expressed strong opposition to U.S. plans to develop a defense system, apparently fearing it would undermine China's own limited nuclear deterrent. Beijing also fears the system could be used to defend Taiwan, which China considers to be a renegade province and has threatened with military force in the past. The United States has maintained that the purpose of the anti-missile shield would be to guard against attacks by what it calls renegade states, such as North Korea and Iraq.
