Putin Meets Nigerian President in Moscow Voice of America, March 6, 2001 Russian President Vladimir Putin has met visiting Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo in Moscow for talks aimed at boosting bilateral trade, security and technical assistance. The talks produced agreements to boost joint military-technical projects and to fight international terrorism. After meeting Mr. Obasanjo Tuesday, President Putin congratulated his Nigerian counterpart for initiating democratic reforms in Nigeria after years of military rule. Mr. Putin also said both leaders had agreed to support the U.N. Security Council in its efforts to end military conflicts on the African continent. Russian news reports say the presidents also were to discuss economic development, including the construction of a long-stalled steel plant in central Nigeria. Mr. Obasanjo had said earlier he wanted to revive the project with Russian help. The Nigerian delegation is also meeting Tuesday with Russia's defense minister to discuss arms exports and weapons deals. Mr. Obasanjo and his delegation arrived Monday in Moscow for a three-day visit. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |
