Israel Blasts Gaza Targets after Palestinian Mortar Fire Voice of America, April 6, 2001 Israeli forces have responded quickly and sharply to Palestinian mortar fire on several Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and a farming village inside Israel. Helicopter gunships struck at several Palestinian security and police posts overnight and Israeli tanks pounded other Palestinian areas early Friday. Israeli officials warned they will retaliate relentlessly and that Palestinian security forces will be targets if the Palestinian Authority fails to prevent attacks against Israelis. Israel's Internal Security Minister Uzi Landau said the Israeli military should hit the Palestinians "every day, hour after hour" as he put it. Palestinian Local Government Minister Saeb Erekat condemned the Landau remarks as despicable and said they exposed the true face of the Israeli government. The Israeli shelling wounded at least five Palestinians, damaged buildings and knocked out power supplies to thousands of Palestinians in Gaza. No Israelis were hurt by the earlier mortar bombs that hit the Jewish settlement of Netzarim in Gaza and an Israeli farming village just across the Gaza border. In other violence, more than 20 Palestinians were injured during clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank, at Ramallah and Bethlehem. Demonstrators were protesting the killing of an Islamic Jihad activist in a booby-trapped public phone booth Thursday. Palestinians say the bombing was an assassination by Israel. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |
