Annan Orders Probe of Mishandled Kidnapping Video July 12, 2001 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday ordered an internal investigation into the mishandling of a videotape that could give valuable clues to the kidnapping of three Israeli soldiers. After months of denying there was a such a tape, UN officials admitted last week it exists. UN peacekeepers shot the videotape in October the day after Hezbollah terrorists abducted the Israeli soldiers from the disputed Shebaa farms region on the Israeli-Lebanese-Syrian border. The tape reportedly shows a blood stained vehicle used by the kidnappers, along with UN uniforms and fake UN license plates. A UN spokesman said the tape would be shown to Israeli officials, but only with faces of the Hezbollah terrorists electronically obscured. Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said Wednesday he is happy the UN is investigating, but insists on seeing an unedited version of the video. Hezbollah leaders have said if the UN gives the unedited video to Israel, it will consider UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon enemy spies.
