Islamic Jihad Terrorist Captured In West Bank July 15, 2001 Palestinian officials say Israeli soldiers have kidnapped a senior Islamic activist in the West Bank. Palestinian officials say disguised Israeli soldiers kidnapped Mahmoud Hamdan, a leading activist with the Islamic Jihad organization. The soldiers were reportedly dressed as produce vendors when they suddenly jumped from their vegetable-laden truck and snatched Mr. Hamdan near his house in Palestinian-ruled Bethlehem. Israeli officials suspect him of being involved in the murder of Israeli soldiers, planting explosives, attacks on Jewish settlers and the killing of alleged Palestinian collaborators. Israeli Cabinet Minister Danny Naveh says the government has the right to take the necessary measures to protect their citizens. He says the Palestinians are still not fulfilling their obligations under the cease-fire agreement mediated by Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet. Mr. Naveh says this means the conditions have not been set for resuming negotiations as recommended by the international inquiry into the violence headed by former U.S. Senator George Mitchell. "Palestinians are still involved in terrorist attacks against innocent Israeli citizens," he said. "We are ready to implement the Tenet understandings. We are ready to move ahead according to the Mitchell Report" he added, "but the Palestinians have to take responsibility and start implementing their obligations." Meanwhile, Israeli security officials say there are clear and immediate warnings of large-scale Palestinian terror attacks. The Israeli army and police are on high alert in Jerusalem and other parts of the country. Israeli officials say the attacks have been planned by Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement, the Islamic Jihad, and members of the Fatah faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization. |
