Sharon to Meet Putin in Moscow August 31, 2001 Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will travel to Moscow next week to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin says the talks will focus on Israeli-Russian relations and the situation in the Middle East. Russia is a co-sponsor of the Middle East peace process, but has mostly let the United States take the lead in peacemaking efforts. The country is also the homeland for hundreds of thousands of Israeli immigrants who left after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991.
