Muslim Construction Damaged Wall of Jerusalem's Temple Mount

August 17, 2001

The Israeli Antiquities Authority has conducted a series of tests on the southern wall of the Temple Mount after sections of the exterior wall were found to be in danger of possible collapse, according to a report in today's Jerusalem Post. The damage is probably due to Muslim construction and demolition work over the past five years at the Solomon's Stables area on the Temple Mount.

The Temple Mount, site of the Al Aqsa mosque, has been under Israeli sovereignty since the Six Day War in 1967. But Israel has allowed an Islamic organization, the Wakf, to continue to control the mosques on the Temple Mount. The Wakf is now controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

The Antiquities Authority conducted tests on the southern wall over the last few months after sections of the southern wall surrounding the Temple Mount could clearly be seen protruding.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Antiquities Authority engineers have found that sections of the southern wall are in "intermediate" danger of collapse.

The Wakf has carried out extensive construction work on the Temple Mount during the past five years, most significantly in 1996 when the area was converted into a mosque.
