Palestinian Legislator Says Israel To Occupy Temple Mount August 12, 2001 A senior Palestinian legislator has accused Israel of planning to seize control of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Abu Ala, the Speaker of the Palestinian legislative council said Sunday that Israel's take-over of Orient House, the unofficial Palestinian headquarters in Jerusalem, and Palestinian offices in Abu Dis reflect Israel's intentions to occupy the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. Israeli security forces seized the Palestinian offices after a Palestinian suicide bomber in Jerusalem killed 15 civilians, including 5 children and an American woman. The Temple Mount has been under Israeli sovereignty since the Six Day War in 1967. But Israel has allowed an Islamic organization, the Wakf, to continue to control the mosques on the Temple Mount. The Wakf is now controlled by the Palestinian Authority. Abu Ala was speaking at a press conference he convened together with the heads of the offices Israel occupied in its Friday morning move. The press conference was held in Abu Dis. Abu Ala called on Israeli peace activists, the U.S., and Arab nations to help the Palestinians.
