Palestinians Dance in the Streets
September 11, 2001
Palestinians celebrated today's suicide attacks in New York and Washington by dancing in the streets.
In the West Bank city of Nablus, some 3,000 Palestinians poured into the street, chanting "God is Great," shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Up to 10,000 Americans are feared dead in the attacks.
The Palestinian revelers distributed candy to passers-by and threw sweets in the air in a traditional gesture of celebration. Palestinian gunmen shot into the air, while other marchers waved Palestinian flags.
One of the celebrants, Nawal Abdel Fatah, said she was happy because "America is the head of the snake, America always stands by Israel in its war against us." Her daughter Maysoon, 22, said she hoped the next attack would be launched against Tel Aviv.
In Arab east Jerusalem, a smaller gathering celebrated the terrorist attacks. Palestinian adults led young children led in chants, while drivers passing the scene honked their horns and flashed victory signs from their windows.
Palestinian terrorist leader Yasser Arafat has denied responsibility for the bombing. The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a radical faction of Arafat's PLO, has claimed responsibility for today's attack. Most U.S. commentators, however, have identified dissident Saudi Arabian terrorist Osama Bin Laden as the key suspect in the attack. Bin Laden is also suspected in the suicide attack on the U.S.S. Cole last year as well as the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998.
Palestinian security officials attempted to confiscate news videos of the celebrations, but scenes of the celebration were widely broadcast on American and Israeli television.
